At the designated time, your private guide will meet you in your hotel lobby, and you'll set off by car toward Dazu, arriving at your first stop after a 1.5 to 2-hour drive through the Chongqing countryside.
We'll begin at the Baodingshan Rock Carvings, the most complete and artistically accomplished of all the Dazu sites. Carved into the cliffs between the 9th and 13th centuries, these sculptures bring together three great strands of Chinese thought in a single sweep of rock. Over roughly 2 hours here, your guide will unpack the stories behind the figures, from the vast reclining Buddha to the crowded scenes depicting the wheel of life.
In the afternoon, we'll move on to the Beishan Rock Carvings, widely regarded as the birthplace of the whole Dazu tradition. Before exploring, we'll pause for a light meal and a chance to rest. The earliest carvings here date to the late Tang dynasty, and their gentler, more refined style set the template for everything that followed. We'll spend around 1.5 hours among the grottoes, tracing how the art evolved across the centuries.
Finally, we'll drive back to Chongqing, dropping you at your hotel after a full 7 hours exploring one of China's most remarkable artistic legacies.
